Festival of Documentary Season 2011-12

From November 2011 to May 2012 People’s Mobile Cinema plans to celebrate a Festival of Documentary Season, bringing together great films from across the country. Moving towards realising its long-term vision, the festival plans to invite filmmakers to the area so that they can present their films to the rural audience. The idea is not only to give an opportunity for the people of the area to have a dialogue with the director, but for the filmmaker to be able to take her film to an audience that has otherwise remained outside the purview of documentary films in the country. International Documentary of Amsterdam (IDFA), Amsterdam is funding this initiative.

SPS Community Videos

We have a parallel programme of more close-knit, interactive sessions of film viewing in the village huts. These are films made by local youth on issues directly related to their lives. Initiated with the help of our partner organisation Digital Green, these are mediated screenings, used as a tool to share best practices, new ideas through testimonies by the farmers themselves or by the programme extension worker or an expert. A village extension worker called Mitaan – a friend, mediates the screening where the opinion, queries and even demand of the audience are recorded in a prescribed feedback form. These are then fed into the database which is uploaded in the Digital Green website. A follow up takes place based on the feedback.

Our film topics range from soil enrichment activities, use of soil moisture, seed variety, effective sowing pattern, preparation and use of bio-pesticides, SHG collective agendas, MGNREGA entitlements and campaigns, dairying benefits, cattle care, etc.

Since August 2009, we have so far produced 100 such films.
Films as training Materials

Films produced by SPS also play important role towards capacity building and providing technical and logistical support to grass-root partners, government agencies and policy makers across the country.
